Throwback 70's

Dekada '70 (English: "The ’70s") is a 2002 Filipino drama film released based on the acclaimed novel by Filipino author, Lualhati Bautista. The film was restored by the ABS-CBN Film Archive.
The film tells the story of a middle-class family in 1970s Philippines, and how they become aware of the political policies that have ultimately led to state repression andMartial Law. Vilma Santos stars as Amanda Bartolome, who realises the implications of living under a dictatorship after sorting out the contradictory reactions of her husband and five sons. Her husband, Julián (Christopher de Leon), supports their eldest son Jules (Piolo Pascual) in his efforts to rail against the government and who later joins the underground Kilusán(Movement); he also refuses Amanda her wish to find a job. Their second son, Gani (Carlos Agassi), is in the United States Navy. Their third son, Eman (Marvin Agustin), writes illegal political exposés and other banned literature. The fourth son, Jason, (Danilo Barrios), was found stabbed to death by corrupt policemen, and the youngest, Bingo (John Wayne Sace), is still a carefree adolescent. She also gains two daughters-in-law: Gani fathers Annaliza with his girlfriend, Evelyn (Dimples Romana), while Jules is revealed to have wed Mara (Ana Capri), a fellow member of the Kilusán and mother of their son.
I was definitely not alive when Martial Law strikes. But as a student, I once read and watched Dekada 70. The film showed us the scene during the darkest period of Philippine history, the Martial Law. During that time, dictator Marcos had led us and brought the government on corruption era where political interest mattered more than public welfare, where freedoms were suppressed; were communist-led movements for ousting Marcos Administration had emerged; and were women were disregarded in the “men’s world”. During this time, the government had everyone on their neck and all the laws are the standards whether a thing or decision is right or wrong. But as I watched the film, I later then realized that it is not only about the politics the film is portraying, but also the gender equality . Lualhati minces no worlds.  Through Amanda, Lualhati told us that women, too, have no limits. IF A MAN CAN, SO DO WOMEN. This film serves as an eye-opener to each and every woman out there with low self-esteem. Thank you Lualhati Bautista! I commend you on that.

Nationality is one’s loyalty and devotion to its nation also excessive patriotism. Nationalism is also the desire for national advancement and independence. Nationalism has many meanings, and can be shown in many different ways, but in the end, nationalism plays a big role in creating national identity. The film Dekada 70 showed us nationalism almost all the time. Julian expressed his nationalism by supporting Ferdinand Marcos “Martial Law”. He did agree on the president’s  decision upon the advantages of Martial Law in the Philippines. Jules, his oldest son showed nationalism by joining the New People’s Army (NPA) because he disagrees on what his father believes about martial law. The NPA is an activist group who aims to fight for the freedom and what is right for the Filipinos. Meanwhile, Gani works for the U.S Military. Em, also showed nationalism by publishing news and stories about what really happens on Martial Law as a journalist. Amanda showed her nationalism when she joined rallies to display her dislike towards the government after her son was killed by the government. Julian, later joined her. The movie displayed many great examples of scenes of protest, and a collective action of creating and preserving traumatic memories through writing and voice. The Bartolome family exhibited various acts of nationalism for they stand on what they believed is right to fight for.

Thanks to the film Dekada 70 for it provides entertainment and it serves as the perfect medium to portray the political ideology of the nationalism back 70’s.

Andres Bonifacio as husband, brother, soldier, and a hero

SUPREMO

SUPREMO is a Filipino biographical film in 2012 that shows the historical picture centering on the life of Philippine hero Andres Bonifacio played by Alfred Vargas. The movie begins in 1882, with the death of Andres Bonifacio's wife, and his awakening to the injustices being carried out by the Spanish.

The cry for independence from the tyranny of Spain echoed louder than ever. Andres Bonifacio, leader of the rebel movement the Katipunan, leads his men to war. Though ill-equipped and untried in the field of battle, the Katipuneros launch an offensive against a vastly superior Spanish military. With him as a leader, the movement is forced to go into battle. It was presented here that if Jose Rizal aimed for reforms to gain independence, Bonifacio clearly wanted freedom with use of arms. What follows is a series of events that will test the nation’s brave sons, and an aftermath that will separate the genuine patriots from mere participants. The last several scenes of the movie were too much brutal especially during the last scene where the Supremo met his in a very wicked manner.

This retelling of Bonifacio's life and his reign as the Supremo, the leader of the Katipuneros, acknowledges its weak points by focusing on the use of practical production equipment, art direction, and dramatic encounters among its characters. The film then focusses over much of the buildup to the revolution and jumps straight to deme
Bonifacio, as leader of the Katipunan. This first part offers little insight into the character, the movie seemingly focused on forced dramatics and heroic posturing.

Alfred Vargas, who portrayed Bonifacio in Supremo, was brilliant. He portrayed his role with the kind of performance that’s associated with the great hero. "What really compelled me to do this film was 'yung passion ko for Andres, and I really want to tell Filipinos the story of Andres Bonifacio," he said. Taking pride in being "pusong Andres Bonifacio," Vargas said he was moved by the hero's life. He hopes to share Bonifacio's legacy to many Filipinos, as it hasn't been touched on extensively by popular media.

"Marami nang pelikula tungkol kay Rizal, at kaunti palang tungkol kay Andres Bonifacio," he said in a very meek manner.

Nationalism on the Big Screen

El Presidente

El Presidente is a 2012 biopic film that tells the life of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines. It is one of the official movie entries of the MMFF (Metro Manila Film Festival) in the year 2012 and it was released nationwide on the 25th day of December 2012. It was directed by Mark Meily starring Gov. Jeorge Estregan, which played as Aguinaldo, with Cesar Montano, Nora Aunor, Cristine Reyes, and Christopher de Leon in supporting roles. The film won several awards like 2nd Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Montano), Best Theme Song, Young Choice Award, Best Sound, Best Make-up, Best Musical Score, and Best Festival Float in MMFF.
The movie started showing glimpses of a young Emilio Aguinaldo, unaware of a great life ahead of him and an old woman giving him cryptic predictions. Until the movie has gone into its depth in telling the significant events happened in the Philippines. From Aguinaldo being the mayor of Cavite el Viejo, to the establishment of Katipunan and to the proclamation of him as the President of the Philippine Republic, and until Frederick Funston's command of 1901 and the American Occupation was depicted in the film.
Retelling a country’s history by means of an hour and a half movie is difficult. Many critics and history buffs showed their disappointments on the said film. Some said that Meily’s film was a historical annoyance, saying that the film showed historical inaccuracies. The film also had a difficulty in bringing up the historical figures like Andres Bonifacio (Cesar Montano), portraying him as a deadbeat revolutionary leader and Antonio Luna (Christopher de Leon), depicted him as a badass and cruel General of the Revolutionary Government.
The production of the movie was impressive, but the film had a difficulty on managing the area under discussion, particularly the absolute absence of sentiment and drama in its understanding of several of the most disorderly decades in our country’s earlier period.

But what most mattered to me is the film’s appreciation on delivering the nationalistic message to its Filipino audience. Most of the Filipino nowadays doesn’t have any idea how hard it is for our revolutionary leaders to fight the invaders. What only our heroes can afford is a bolo knife and very, very few guns compare to our intruders, they had cannons and other powerful weapons.

However, this is not about weapons. This is about our heroes’ love for our country. It doesn’t really matter on how powerful our invaders would be or how great their weapons are, because each and every hero has heart as big as anyone could imagine. Their love for the country and the desire to attain freedom are things to consider why our generation enjoy what we have today.
'El Presidente' may not delivered the historical context that was written on our books. But the message was clear, and it promotes nationalism. The film was made to remind us of something that our past leaders was into, and it was the desire to be independent from the invaders. Sovereignty and independence are what 'Inang Bayan' wished to attain and it was shown in the film.Though the film had some inaccuracies, I saw the film as a serious attempt to bring difference to the Philippine cinema. I find the film valuable enough to be treasured as it incited to form curiosity and as it promoted audiences to have an open mind to the idea of heroism and sense of patriotism.

2012. We've been warned

A movie directed by Roland Emmerich, Hollywood's king director of catastrophe, the critically acclaimed director of “Independence Day”, “The Day after Tomorrow” and the astonishingly accomplished, reprehensible-yet-irresistible "2012”.

The movie started with the misapprehend prediction of the Mayan, and the series of global catastrophes that threatens to annihilate the humankind.

The story centers on the struggle of the protagonist Jack Curtis to save his family from the doomsday, which in Mayan calendar. December 21, 2012. The known 2012 phenomenon, is a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events would occur on or around 21 December 2012.

It’s a movie of incredible special effects and unbelievably story line.
The strongest point in this movie is the “I have to witness this” factor. And a plus, is the same groove of the story and the effects.

It’s an action-packed entertainment built around efforts to survive, and not to prevent the wreckage of the world, but to plan for the continuation of the human race.

The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004 American science fiction disaster film
directed by Roland Emmerich. The film shows catastrophic effects of the global warming in series of extreme weather events that usher in global cooling and leads to a new ice age.

A paleoclimatologist Jack Hall presented his findings on global warming to the United Nations meeting but failed to convince them. However, Terry Rapson, a professor of Climate Research Centre in Scotland believes that Hall’s theories are true and he concluded that melting polar ice has started to disrupt the north Atlantic current. He contacted Jack along with the NASA and built a forecast model with their combined data to make precautionary measures to prepare their fellow citizens.

Across the world, violent weather causes mass destruction. At the International Space Station, three astronauts saw a huge storm system spanning the northern hemisphere and this worsened the situation that latter develop into a massive-hurricane storm with eyes holding extremely cold air that instantly freezes anything it comes on contact with. US President Blake suspended all air traffic due to severe turbulence. As the storm worsens, Blake immediately ordered the evacuation of the southern states of the United States, transferring all the refugees to Mexico City.

During the deep freeze, the Vice-President ordered UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to flown into New York, finding many, many more survivors, now serving as the President after the death of Blake. The movie concludes with the astronauts looking down at Earth from the Space Station, showing most of the northern hemisphere covered in ice and snow.

The immediate forecast that warned the whole nation triggered the survival of many individuals.

Evan Almighty is a 2007 American religious comedy film and was directed by Tom Shadyac. The film is about Evan Baxter (Steve Carell), a former news anchor and a newly elected Congressman who is praying to God (Morgan Freeman) to help him change the world, which is also his promise to his people.

As an answered question, God sent signs and weird things start to happen to Evan.

Evan sets his alarm clock on 7:00 am but the clock alarms at 6:14 am.

Woods and tools are sent for Evan even he did not ordered for it.

Evan soon realizes that the number 614 refers to the verse in the Book of Genesis, where God instructs Noah to build an Ark in preparation for a flood.

Until finally, God Himself appeared to Evan. Telling him that he should build an ark.

Evan: I just don't understand why You chose me. God: You want to change the world son, so do I.
How to build an Ark guide book from God :)

Evan was hesitant at first. He was followed by animals anywhere and even God appeared at the back seat of his car.
Party Animals!
Oh my God!

Until Evan settled down to build the ark. Its like there's gonna be another Great Flood that will happen in the modern world. So for Evan to prepare for it, he's going to build a modern day ark.

Challenge accepted!

Animals help Evan to build the ark.

Even Evan's family supported him! His children and his wife showed their love by helping to construct the ark and by believing him that there's gonna be a flood that will destroy their community.

The family that builds together, stays together.

People did not believe on what Evan says. Some of them think that he's insane.  Evan trusts his faith and loads all the animals onto the newly-finished Ark in front of hundreds of spectators and live news crews, who continue to make many jokes about him. Not until the flood came in.

People and animals had endured the flood. Thanks to Evan who built the ark. But of course, more great thanks to our God the Father.

Animals and Humans are now safe :)
